Introducing a new series of paintings
‘inter-’
From the latin meaning between, among, mutually, reciprocally.
In ecology, we find these types of relationships everywhere; nature is always in conversation with itself—roots with fungi, soil with rain, predator with prey, and on and on.
Our relationships (with ourselves, the people around us, and the environment in which we live) is also ‘inter-’. Many identities exist within me and have shaped the ways in which I approach a canvas; so too does my artistic work affect the way in which I walk through the world as I wear my many identities.
In the context of this series, ‘inter-’ refers to a direct relationship between colors and mediums. The paintings were all created with a combination of natural hand-made pigments and traditionally manufactured paints. The compositions were created by first putting down a layer of foraged natural botanical color–blue from a carrot, green from buckthorn berries, brown from walnut husks, and warm yellow from a polypore mushroom. These hand-made colors are then interwoven with traditional oil paints. The form of each shapes the other–between, among, in the midst of, mutually, reciprocally.
Botanical colors are ephemeral by design; they will most certainly change significantly over time. The oil paints are archival; their color will likely outlive us all. The dialogue between the two mediums is a dance that will continue to evolve over time in each of these paintings.
