July '24 To the Woods'

About the Series

From a summer spent amongst a field of flowers across from the old Woods barn.

The series is filled with the buzzing humming energy of full summer. This energy surrounded me each time I sat down to paint.

I worked almost exclusively outdoors, in the flower fields around the Wood’s Market Garden farm stand as well as in some of my favorite fields near Middlebury, Vermont. Bees often landed on my canvas looking for pollen amongst the colors. I hope these paintings remind you of these full bustling days of summer, even when they have given way to the stillness of quieter seasons.

The signature natural pigment for this series is black petunia teal, which was discovered by a happy accident after visiting Wood’s Market Garden one beautiful day in late May. I incorporated this pigment into each of the paintings in this series, helping to reinforce the connection between place, process, and image.

Natural colors in these paintings

For this collection, I used black petunias from the Woods Garden Market family farm. Learn more about these natural pigments and the series.

Gizelle B., Toronto

"When people ask me about the artwork I tell them about how the pigments are ground from the earth and how the artist sits in the fields and allows the environment to aid in the creation of the piece. Having this work in my space brings a sense of nature indoors that feels calming and grounding."
