Fall '24 Sacred Circle

About the Series

The paintings in this series were inspired by the Spirit in Nature paths in Ripton, Vermont during peak fall foliage.

They contain pigments foraged during that same fall season, including sacred circle charcoal, goldenrod, buckthorn berry, wild grape, and orange ochre rock.

The Spirit in Nature Paths event was a beautiful convergence of art, nature, and community. Under golden sunlight filtering through the brilliant yellow fall foliage, attendees gathered to explore the trails, and to connect with art and one another. Paintings were displayed on trees around the circle, and we gathered, sharing tea, conversation, and connection over art and nature.

The series features a circle motif, reinforcing a calendar year in which community (and a solar eclipse) played a prominent role.

Natural colors in these paintings

For this collection, I used buckthorn berry, goldenrod, wild grape, and charcoal from a community fire circle. Learn more about these natural pigments and the series.

Gizelle B., Toronto

"When people ask me about the artwork I tell them about how the pigments are ground from the earth and how the artist sits in the fields and allows the environment to aid in the creation of the piece. Having this work in my space brings a sense of nature indoors that feels calming and grounding."
