The bold washes of pigment overlap and intertwin in an almost endless constellation of color. The image takes its name from sumac plants, which produce bright red fuzzy “berries” in late summer and bright red leaves in late fall. These berries serve as an important food source for native wildlife through the winter. The painting too, invites the viewer to feast on rich color, even as winter approaches.
