buckthorn berry, oil paint on paper
Picotee describes flowers whose edge is a different colour from the flower's base colour. The word originates from the French picoté, meaning 'marked with points'.
This artwork is part of Inter-, a collection created during a season of deep reflection on relationships—between materials, identities, and the natural world. The title comes from the Latin root meaning “between,” “among,” or “mutually,” and that sense of reciprocity guided my process. Each painting began with color gathered from the land. These natural colors—soft, shifting, impermanent—were laid down first, then layered with traditional oil paint, which holds its form with time. I wanted the materials to shape one another, to speak across layers and contrast: the fugitive with the enduring, the wild with the refined. I hope this series invites you to reflect on what shapes your own story—and how we are all, always, in relationship.
Please note the ephemeral nature of botanical inks and pigments; original art has been sealed with UV protectant varnish, but should be displayed out of full sun to slow color shifts. Change in color is expected within five years, and is part of the unique character of this artwork. Compositions utilize a combination of fugitive natural pigments and traditionally manufactured paints which are more lightfast so that they will continue to look beautiful even as they change over time. If you are concerned about the color shifts of natural pigments, you should purchase an archival fine art print, which captures the same beautiful color of the original pigments but will not change over time.
Please consider measurements carefully before purchase and take the time to view colors on different monitors, as colors may appear different on different devices. I have done my best to represent all artworks accurately. All works are signed, stamped, and titled individually by the artist.
